![]() ![]() On the book jacket someone defines it as “a naughty fairy tale for grow-ups” and I could not agree more. A tall, yellow-haired young European traveller calling himself Mogor dell’Amore, the Mughal of Love, arrives at the court of the real. Not that the characters don’t duel in philosophical considerations, just the opposite, but Rushdie manages to embed these rationalizations/meditations into the narrative without making them forceful or tiring – truly an amazing feat. Reviews aren't verified, but Google checks for and removes fake content when it's identified. ![]() Fatehpur Sikri (India) - Fiction., Florence (Italy) - Fiction., Mogul Empire - History - 16th century - Fiction. Rushdie is undoubtedly an academic, whose writing is full of metaphor and questionings, but in this book he handles those with a master’s approach, mixing adventure and sorcery with questionings about power and love in such a perfect dose. The enchantress of Florence by Salman Rushdie. The writing is gorgeous, but the magic narrative is what grabbed me and would not let me go. But on "The Enchantress of Florence" he goes a step farther, mixing fables and history, story lines leading into story lines, creating a fantastic and sensual universe somewhere between East and West. So much is said about Rushdie’s magic realism. ![]() I had for a while searched for a book that would reproduce the reading experience of “Seven Gothic Tales” by Isak Dinesen, but I never thought that Salman Rushdie would be the author to do it. ![]() 6/20/2023 0 Comments Phoenix extravagant yoon ha lee![]() This was less confusing than the anti-woke mob might presume when reading. Lee himself identifies an a trans man/ queer (choosing “him/ he”) and his protagonist here is a gender neutral “them/they”. Is it Steampunk, SciFi- Fantasy, Alternative History, Parody…? Or none/ all?Īmerican-Korean author Lee is not just transgressive in genre blending, but in the themes and characters of his story here. Lots of norm transgressions, in the best possible way. The genre is new to me, a giant leap really. So I was already well sold on Phoenix Extravagant (2021) by American writer Yoon Ha Lee ( Wikipedia interview) for this month’s book choice, only then to be even further persuaded by the following excellent, quick review by a fellow club member (posted with permission): ![]() ![]() But, expanding my literary horizons was of the main reasons I started this book club, as was supporting more LGBTQ representation in Korean and Korean-American fiction. A medley of steampunk, fantasy, and magic realism? And featuring multiple animal characters? Frankly, none of those I like at all, let alone when all put together. ![]() ![]() There are few who have a genuine natural talent for writing and Preston seems to be a gifted one who effortlessly plays down the entire saga like a well made TV show. ![]() With every sentence I could imagine myself as a fly on the wall watching the events unfold and unleash the horror that this disease is. This book reads like a classic page turner with every page filling you with dread and horror. But boy-o-boy was I unprepared to understand the ferocity of such a disease or even comprehend what an epidemic entails. After the recent outbreak of the Corona virus, I decided to pick a book which hovers in the same vicinity when it comes to the terror it inflicts on everyone. Actual facts about the origin of one of the most deadliest of viral diseases-Ebola! To think that a disease could do such harm is not only petrifying, it is way way beyond it. Imagine the best horror story you’ve ever read now multiply it twice over and you have ‘The Hot Zone.’ for every word in this story is a fact! There is no fiction and no made up things. ![]() 6/19/2023 0 Comments Games People Play by Eric Berne![]() ![]() ![]() Whatever type of game we are playing, it’s usually manipulative and we don’t even realize we’re doing it.įascinating, right? But Eli is also sentimental and unusually sensitive in an era and terrain dominated by pistol-fisted reactionaries – the sweetest stone-cold killer you'd ever meet.Įli narrates DeWitt's black-comic picaresque, chronicling with an eye askant his and his brother's journey to San Francisco, where they're meant to murder a man on the order of their boss, an Old West despot known only as the Commodore. Summarized by one of their prey as "the mean one" and "the fat one," Charlie is the elder, a bully quick to violence and to drink, and Eli is indeed on the chunky side (he's a stress eater). The Sisters brothers are Charlie and Eli, hired guns trekking across Gold Rush country. ![]() 6/19/2023 0 Comments More Than Blood by Brea Alepoú![]() ![]() There is also a beta that tests Rheland’s resolve, twins that are constantly hot and cold, and the last thing Rheland expected, a human that reminds him of his first love.Ī vampire king who has everything but love, a werewolf alpha who never wanted to lead his own pack, a bloodthirsty beta werewolf, brothers who need a strong hand, and a human who only wants to understand the supernatural. Following his inclusion, why didn't he call the police? His ex-wife is missing, but it's ok because his teenaged daughter will look into it? That's the main plot of a million other stories where the (ex-)husband is the prime suspect when his wife goes missing. Several characters in the book point this out, including her father. The book spends a lot of time finding reasons to avoid the obvious: Maja should have immediately reported her mother missing. There are two things that bothered me while reading this book:ġ. These are metaphors for her internal turmoil and for growing up with an emotionally detached mother. Maja is the recipient of numerous physical wounds throughout the book. One weekend, her mother goes missing, and what follows is about solving the mystery of what happened to her. The plot is that Maja’s parents are divorced, and she spends every other weekend with her mother, Jana. It also won the August Prize in 2010 which is an annual Swedish literary prize. There’s a lot of teen angst that drives the plot, so be prepared. It was written for young adults, and the protagonist is sixteen years old. ![]() That assumption is correct, and anyone looking for an easy, good read will like this book. I read this book in the original Swedish because I figured the text would be simpler. ![]() 6/19/2023 0 Comments Michelle paver wolfbane![]() ![]() 'Can easily be read as a standalone novel, so skilful is the storytelling.
